RH Cloud Couch vs. Aspen Cloud: An Honest Side-by-Side on Comfort, Fill and Price

Short answer: buy the RH Cloud if you want the original feather-and-down sink, the biggest fabric library in the category, and a gallery you can visit in most major cities, and you are comfortable spending five figures and fluffing cushions to keep it looking right. Buy the Aspen Cloud if you want the same low, deep, cloud-style silhouette with a foam core that springs back, covers you can throw in the washing machine in every fabric, GREENGUARD Gold certified materials, and a comparable four-piece sectional for $1,995 instead of roughly $9,000 to $14,000.

I should say up front that I am biased: I founded Aspen Nest. Before that, I spent five years buying, refurbishing and reselling thousands of used sofas across the Colorado Front Range, so I have seen what designer cushions look like after a few years in a real living room. That is the lens for this comparison, and I have tried to be fair about where RH wins.

In this article

What is the RH Cloud couch, and why does everyone want one?

The RH Cloud was designed by Timothy Oulton for Restoration Hardware, and it is the sofa that turned "cloud couch" into its own category. The signature is a low, boxy, modular shape with oversized cushions: a feather-and-down wrap over a high-resiliency foam core, built for sinking in rather than sitting up. It comes in three depths (Petite 36 in, Classic 40 in and Luxe 45 in), in everything from a two-cushion sofa to a full U-shaped sectional, and in fabrics that run from machine-washable Perennials performance textiles to dry-clean-only linens, velvets and wool.

The hype is earned. When Apartment Therapy's editors tested every sofa at RH, they named the Cloud the comfiest of the bunch. The same editors noted it has less bounce-back than RH's other sofas and needs regular fluffing. Hold that thought, because it matters more than any spec on this page.

How do the RH Cloud and Aspen Cloud compare at a glance?

Here is the side-by-side, using RH's Classic depth and our Aspen Cloud Petite Sectional + Ottoman (4-Piece), the two closest four-piece configurations.

Which one is more comfortable?

On the first sit, the RH Cloud wins. Feather and down compress under you in a way nothing synthetic quite copies, and if that first-sit feeling is the whole point for you, the Cloud is the sofa to buy.

The question I would ask is what the cushion looks like in month eighteen. In five years of reselling, the sofas that came to me flat, lumpy and oddly tilted were almost always feather-and-down seats whose owners had stopped fluffing them. Feather fill migrates, and it needs near-daily attention to keep the shape you saw in the showroom. Reviewers say the same about the Cloud: Apartment Therapy's editors flagged the regular fluffing, and one long-term review described the cushions looking flat and wrinkled after every use unless they were plumped again.

The Aspen Cloud takes a different route to the same feel. Each seat has a high-density foam core wrapped in hypoallergenic alternative down, so the top layer gives and the core brings the cushion back when you get up. The back cushions are 100% alternative down and unzip, so you can add or remove fill until the back is exactly as soft or as supportive as you like. Both sofas are deep lounging sofas built on a 40-inch module, with about 22 inches of seat in front of an upright back cushion and a 19-inch seat height. On the Aspen Cloud the back cushions are loose, so you can push them back when you want more room to stretch out. If you want to go deeper than that, RH's 45-inch Luxe depth is something we don't offer.

What does each one cost, really?

A four-piece RH Cloud Classic sectional runs roughly $9,000 to $14,000 depending on depth and fabric. Apartment Therapy listed a four-piece sofa-chaise configuration at $9,150 in its cloud couch roundup, and secondhand listings of Classic four-piece sets in Perennials fabric cite an original retail price around $14,000. RH shows member pricing separately, so check what you would actually pay before you compare.

The Aspen Cloud Petite Sectional + Ottoman (4-Piece) is $1,995 in linen or velvet and $2,495 in performance linen. That gets you two corners, an armless seat and a reversible ottoman chaise, 112 by 72 inches, with threshold delivery at $79 or white-glove delivery at $149. Put another way, for the price of one RH Cloud you could furnish the living room, the basement and the guest room and still have money left for the rug.

What are you giving up? Mostly the things in the "what RH does better" section below: true feather fill, a 45-inch depth option, a much larger fabric wall, and the name. You are not giving up a kiln-dried frame, deep seats or washable covers.

How long will you wait, and what if you don't love it?

RH Cloud lead times depend on whether your exact configuration and fabric are in stock. Special orders are made to order, so check the delivery estimate at checkout and read the return terms for special-order upholstery before you commit.

Aspen Cloud sectionals are stocked in our Denver warehouse, which means same-day or next-day delivery across the Denver metro, scheduled around your week, or free pickup at our Wheat Ridge showroom. Every sofa comes with a 30-day return window (unopened items are refunded in full, opened items carry a 20% restocking fee) and a 3-year manufacturer's warranty covering the frame, construction and workmanship.

Which holds up better with kids and pets?

This is where the two sofas really part ways.

  • Washable covers in every fabric. On the RH Cloud, whether you can machine wash a cover depends on the fabric you chose. On the Aspen Cloud, every cushion cover zips off and machine washes cold, in linen, performance linen, velvet and chenille alike. Our fabric comparison page shows which ones resist stains best.
  • Cushions that recover. A foam core does not care how many times a six-year-old cannonballs onto it. If you want to see what is inside any cushion before you buy, our seven five-minute quality checks show you how.
  • Hypoallergenic fill. Alternative down has no feather quills to work through the ticking and nothing for a dust allergy to react to.
  • Low-emission materials. The Aspen Cloud is GREENGUARD Gold certified, UL's stricter tier for low chemical emissions, and the fabrics are PFAS-free. I started paying attention to off-gassing while unboxing cancelled orders and returned sofas from other brands, and it is not something I want in a room where a toddler spends the day.
  • Modules that stay put. Each section connects underneath so the pieces do not drift apart. Drift is a real complaint about cheap modular sofas, but the number one complaint I hear is simpler: the cushions were never comfortable to begin with, or they go flat within a year. Ours do not, and the foam core is the reason.

What does the RH Cloud do better?

  • The feather feel. If you love it, no foam-core cushion will replace it.
  • Depth choice. Three depths, including the 45-inch Luxe for people who want to lie sideways with room to spare.
  • Fabric range. Dozens of textiles, from Perennials performance weaves to Belgian linen and Italian velvet. We offer seven colorways across four fabric types.
  • Galleries. RH has galleries across the country. We have one showroom, in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, and a 30-day return window so you can make the final call at home.
  • Resale value. Secondhand RH Clouds sell for thousands on resale sites because of the name, and that is real money if you plan to sell in five years. The Aspen Cloud is too new to have a resale history, and I say that as someone who used to make a living on exactly that spread.

Which should you choose?

Choose the RH Cloud if:

  • Budget is not the deciding factor and you want the original.
  • You love feather and down and you will fluff it most days.
  • You want the 45-inch Luxe depth.
  • The name matters to you, or to the resale price later.

Choose the Aspen Cloud if:

  • You want the cloud look and the sink-in depth without a five-figure price.
  • You have kids, pets, or a feather allergy, and you want covers you can wash.
  • You're in the Denver area and want it in your living room this week, not next season.
  • You expect to move, rearrange, or add sections later. Build your layout here.

Frequently asked questions

Is the RH Cloud couch worth it?

If you want the original feather-and-down sink and the budget is there, yes, with one condition: you have to be willing to fluff the cushions regularly or it will not look like the catalog for long. If you want the look and the depth without the upkeep or the price, a foam-core cloud-style sectional like the Aspen Cloud gets you most of the way there for a fraction of the cost.

Is the Aspen Cloud a dupe of the RH Cloud?

It is an alternative, not a copy. The low silhouette and 40-inch depth are in the same family, but the construction is different on purpose: a high-density foam core wrapped in hypoallergenic alternative down, removable machine-washable covers in every fabric, and modules that latch together with no tools.

Does the Aspen Cloud need fluffing like the RH Cloud?

Not daily. The cushions arrive compressed for shipping and need a good fluff out of the box, and we recommend rotating and fluffing them occasionally for even wear. After that the foam core does the work.

Can you wash the Aspen Cloud cushion covers?

Yes. Every cushion cover zips off. Machine wash cold on a delicate cycle, then air dry or tumble dry with no heat.

Where does Aspen Nest deliver?

Right now we deliver across the Denver metro from our local warehouse, same-day or next-day for in-stock sectionals, and you can pick up at our Wheat Ridge showroom. Nationwide shipping is in the works; the email signup at the bottom of this page is the fastest way to hear when it opens.

Can I try the Aspen Cloud before I buy?

Yes. Book a showroom visit in Wheat Ridge, or have it delivered and let the 30-day return window be your showroom.
